Fishing and Hunting in the Bancroft
District
Fishing
The
Bancroft District is in Central Ontario on the southern
edge of the Pre-Cambrian Shield which has a long established
reputation for its rugged, hilly scenery and fine fishing.
There are over 800 lakes varying in size from large bodies
such as Baptiste and Paudash to peaceful ponds. Hundreds
of miles of streams and rivers also exist. The lakes,
rivers and streams support a wide variety of game fish,
including trout, bass, musky and walleye.
Sport fishing in Ontario is regulated by both federal
and provincial laws. The main federal law is the Fisheries
Act of Canada, which protects and conserves fish stocks.
The provincial legislation is the Game and Fish Act, which
deals with licensing of fisheries. All fishers have the
responsibility of obeying these laws.
To familiarize yourself with fishing regulations, seasons
and licencing obtain your copy of the Sport Fishing Regulations
Summary from your local Ministry of Natural Resources
(MNR) office or contact the Bancroft office of the MNR
at Box 500, Bancroft, Ontario, KOL 1CO or call (613) 332-3940.
Hunting
It
might be the flash of a fleeing whitetailed deer, the
whir of an airborne grouse, or the hulking silhouette
of a bull moose that stirs the hunters heart within
you. Or it might be a strutting wild turkey or the V-formation
of honking Canada geese. Whatever it is that touches the
hunter in you, chances are good that you can find it in
Bancroft. Its vast and diverse wild places, with a variety
and abundance of game, speak directly to the soul of the
hunter.
